I did some hiking and fishing this summer and actually remembered to take some pictures on my last adventure. My buddy Tyler Black and I hiked into the Crazy Mountains in search for some golden trout. Here are some pictures from that. It was probably the most intense backpacking trip I have done...but well worth it!

I thought this was a pretty good photo. I think the way the trees outline the main focus of the sunrise turned out well. I also like the contrast in the trees and the sky. The contrast makes the photo almost look black and white with the sky in color. The trees are all silhouettes against the background. This gives the photo some good layers with the trees being right up front the steam in the middle, the mountain behind the steam, and beyond that the sky and clouds. The sky has an even warmth to it.

This photo really caught my eye when I first saw it. The way the bird is looking right at the camera and the photographer captures the eye makes this photo interesting. Also, I think the lighting was exceptional for this photo. The color of the water compliments the color of the bird and vice-verse. I wish the foot had been under the bird instead of sticking out, but that is hard to control in this setting. Also the reflection would have been cool if it was all there.

This photo is a good example of the rule of thirds. There is a definite foreground, mid ground, and background. I like how there is only one goose with wings in motion while all the other were just walking or standing. This photo brings the focus right to the focal point of motion. Also, the fact that only one goose is moving is appealing since odd numbers are more appealing. The background adds alot to the photo with its color contrasting with the blacks, whites, and grays of the geese and the beach.

This photo looks alright but the colors are a bit overdone. They pop out, but I think they pop out a little too much. I feel like when this photo was edited the temperature or saturation could have been toned down a bit. However, the lighting was pretty good. I like the way the light shines through the tees and lights up the bridge. Another positive point about this photo is the way the river starts in the bottom right corner and leads the eyes up through the photo to main focus point. I feel like maybe the tree on the left of the bridge was cut off a bit. However if the photographer had captured the top of the tree it may have taken away from the river leading the eyes. I do like the way the trees frame the photo.

This photo really caught my eye. I like the contrast of the oranges and yellows with the greens. It really makes the flower pop out. The clarity also helps this as the flower is in focus while the green background is blurry. Perhaps the brightness could have been a bit less. However this may take away the vibrant qualities of the photo. I think the oranges in the background are somewhat distracting however the placement is alright since they only take up that top left corner.

The color in this photo is really nice. However, I think that it could be edited to bring out the contrast and detail in the leaves. This might have been achieved if the ISO or f stop would have been turned down one stop. I felt like when i looked at it all I could see was the red but the detail was drowned out by the brightness of it. I also wish the whole tree was in the frame so I could see it all. I feel like it would have contrasted nicely with the sky. The greens in the background were a nice addition.

I thought this photo had a little too much happening in it. There are so many lines and they mostly straight. The slanted branches in the trees in the middle make this picture more interesting. This picture has some depth with good layers. It is just hard to see beyond the tree layer and find a point of focus. The light on the mountains really grabs the viewers attention. The trees somewhat frame it but there are too many branches for my taste.

This is a very interesting photo. I enjoyed the way the spider is so clear even though it is basically the same color of the flower. I think the low F-stop helped contrast the whites without making them too bright. Also, the focus is not quite centered so the viewer is led from the spider to flower and back. The way the spiders eyes are in the photo is really cool too. The detail in this photo is excellent as you can see the hairs on the spider's legs as well as the hairs on the flower.

This photo is framed really well with the thermal pool and the geyser positioned very comfortably. This takes the eyes from the pool up to the geyser and out with the steam. The layers are nice the way each point of focus is in a different layer and there are multiple layers in the photo. The purples look like they were turned up in editing, however if that is what it looked like right there that is fantastic. I really enjoyed the way the photographer captured the geyser erupting. The blues in the thermal pool compliment the darker blues of the sky and contrast nicely with the tan of the surrounding earth.

The depth in this photo is excellent. The way the foreground goes all the way into the background and they clouds at the top of the picture add an upper layer of depth that is very appealing. The two forks of the river lead the eye all the way back to the mountains in the background. It feels like this photo just keeps going. The lighting is also very nice making the colors in the foreground contrast with the dark colors of the mountains then the lights of the clouds. The rule of thirds is demonstrated well with this photo as there are three horizontal lines of color.

This photo of fog rolling down the mountain is really cool. It is my favorite of the three pictures. I like the contrast of the lit up mountain side with the dark side. The lighting is really nice. Its kinda red i think though. This picture also made me think of the seven rules we learned. I thought of the rule stating diagonal lines are more appealing than straight. The photographer definitely accomplished this.

2. http://500px.com/photo/53223664

I really like the colors in this photo. The blues and greens all around and the dark rock. Its pretty cool. I did not like how blurry the picture was. It is interesting the way the only thing in focus is the rock I like that part. I know the photographer probably meant to make it this way but it kind of looks like he dropped his camera in the water then took the picture. Also the sky is rather blurry. This is probably due to the length of the shutter speed. I am not sure if I would have taken this photo at that long of a shutter speed. However, I don't know because I was not there taking pictures and seeing what looked best. Still a cool picture.

3. http://500px.com/photo/53186784

This picture is quite simple. It is of a red squirrel jumping, hence the name 'Jumping Red Squirrel'. I imagine that this photo was rather hard to get. The squirrel is very clear for being in mid-air. The colors are nice and the photographer used the rule of thirds quite nicely, having the wood in the foreground the squirrel right in the middle and background at the top. The only thing I didn't really like was the way the wood was so fuzzy. If there was any way to make it clearer I would have. However, I am not sure how possible that would be. I really liked this picture.Brandon.haggardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03910411599592120061noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8359291920648676723.post-91346902492289352692013-10-29T14:09:00.000-07:002013-10-29T14:09:13.162-07:00

Here are some pictures I got of some lightning over Billings. I did some editing to them. I used a 20 second exposure on the first and a 15 second exposure on the second. The editing mostly consisted of trying to make the lightning pop out of the picture more. The biggest difference in these pictures compared to the raw images is that the city lights were much brighter in the raw. I had really had to dim the city lights in order to get the lightning to jump out more. I also had to improve the clarity and contrast. Overall for my first lightning pictures I think they turned out alright.
I have! There is a very famous photo of the earth called "Eearthrise". It was taken by astronaut William Anders, crewmember of Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon. Nothing too special...except that its a picture of the earth rising above the horizon of the moon!. That's pre neat if you ask me. Well anyway I just thought I would share it with you.

I was curious about underwater photography. So I looked it up on...you guessed it National Geographic...they are great. Anyway, I was wondering what kind of special gear one would need to get good underwater shots of nature. I found this information about the basic gear and settings for getting good underwater photos.

Here are some example pictures taken by our friend Raul.

Choose the Right Gear
When choosing what gear
to use, keep in mind that there are two basic—and hugely
different—systems: A point-and-shoot camera in a waterproof case and a
DSLR (digital single lens reflex) in an underwater housing with external
strobes, such as that shown here.
The first system has some
advantages, including ease of use (no complex set up) and economy.
Point-and-shoots are also fun for taking pictures on the surface, where
there’s a lot of light. One of this option’s major disadvantages is the
inability of the photographer, in most cases, to direct light, since the
strobe in these cameras is integrated into its body. Also, manual
control of exposure is difficult to achieve.
Most professional
photographers use DSLRs, as we have total and absolute control over the
system. With a DSLR it’s possible to control aperture and speed
depending on the situation or desired effect, e.g., movement. It’s also
possibe to point the strobes where they’re needed. But the system does
have some disadvantages in that it can be cumbersome, hard to maintain,
and expensive.—Raul Touzon

Be Familiar With Basic Settings
Here are some
basic camera settings that will improve your underwater imagery.
Remember, in some point-and-shoot systems you might not be able to reach
these controls underwater in a fast and efficient manner.

White balance: For most cases put your white balance in daylight mode, especially if you are using flash.

ISO: Keep your ISO low (100 or 200). Higher ISOs will, in most cases, result in “digital noise” in your pictures.

Aperture:
Depending on how deep you’re working, most of the time you’ll be
shooting between f8 and f16. This will provide you with greater depth of
field.

Speed: In the manual setting, it’s the
right combination of aperture and speed that will yield the correct
exposure. I tend to use speed as a creative tool—if I want my subject to
be sharp and motionless I’ll go to a higher shutter speed: 1/125th or
1/250th. Or if I want to convey or capture motion, e.g., fish swimming, a
slower shutter speed of 1/15th or lower is the way to go.

Focus:
I tend to keep my focus in automatic and in single subject, which
allows me to autofocus on the subject. In this mode, as long as I keep
the shutter button down, it will hold the focus even if I recompose the
scene.—Raul Touzon

I was wondering what the top 10 photography destinations in the world were. So I decided to see what National Geographic had to say about this since they take alot of pictures pretty much everywhere on the earth. This is what I found. I wish I could visit these places.
Picture Critique

Picture #1: This picture looks like the photographer may have used a polarized lens. I like how the bear is very clear and brown while not too dark and the water is not too bright.

Picture #2: It also shows good use of layers used in a nature landscape. There is a foreground, middle, and background. Follows the rule of thirds.

Picture #3: This is really cool example of water in motion and slow shutter speed. I also really like how the white water contrasts the black sand and rocks.

Picture #4: This picture shows how a longer shutter speed soaks up more light. Normally you would
not be able to see the mountains in that bright of light. I also noticed that the photographer used an ISO of 100 which works great for landscape pictures.

Picture #5: This picture has some good layers. It has five layers as a good landscape should.

Picture #6: This is a good example of a clear picture of the subject while having a blurry background. The photographer used a higher ISO and lower aperture value.

Picture #7: This picture looks a bit grainy. Also the water is really reflective. I think using a polarizer would help get this picture under control.

Picture #8: This picture uses the idea of reds being more attractive than other colors and the rule of thirds plays out nicely.

Picture #9: A good example of using the quick shutter speed.

Picture #10: This one is interesting. Shows contrast within the whites and grays. I took this picture last summer when I went on a backpacking trip in the Beartooth Mountains. Out of all the pictures I took on that trip this one is my favorite. I used a point and shoot camera for this shot (more about this camera later). I did not really know much about photography when this was taken I just was snapping pictures for the fun of it. When I got back and actually looked at all the pictures, this one stuck out to me. I really liked it and I just thought I would share it.
Hello,

I found this photographer a couple of years ago when I stumbled upon a time lapse video he had of the milky way. I thought it was really cool and just thought I would share a recent picture he posted on Facebook. I could not find a website that was just his photography. If you are bored or just want to look at some cool pictures you can Google Terje Sorgjerd. You can also find his time lapse video on YouTube. I hope you all enjoy his photography as much as I did.
